MUSIC...

Indulge your senses by listening to Adam Lambert’s debut CD, For Your Entertainment. This collection of diverse sounds by the former American Idol contestant will offer something for everyone: soaring ballads, sizzling dance tunes, and a lot of good, hardrock and roll. A mind-blowing, modern pop masterpiece!

Were you fortunate enough to get tickets to Michael Bublé’s sold-out concert in March? Either way, check out his latest CD
Crazy Love. The library also owns the CD/DVD combo Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden. You can’t miss with either one of these.

Lastly, the Zac Brown Band has crafted an album,
Foundation, that is full of the comfortable sounds of Americana. From the crisp male harmonies that bring to

mind the country superstars of the Seventies, Alabama and the Oak Ridge Boys, to the escapist songs popularized by artists like Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band manages to craft a down-home sound for every listener. While many of the songs are light in tone, you’ll find that even their more serious material, especially the song “Highway 20 Ride", crafted in the form of a note from a divorced father to his son, has emotional resonance and staying power.

BOOKS ...
If you’re looking for a great spring read, check out Love in Bloom by Sheila Roberts. It’s the story of several women at different stages in life, looking for friendship, guidance and gardening advice. A very cozy read!

Immerse yourself in the charming fantasy world of
The Gates by the multi-talented John Connolly. Like the main character of his 2006 gem, The Book of Lost Things, this story is about a young boy battling evil forces threatening the world. Humor, adventure, history and science are all elements of this whimsical adventure story. Let yourself be drawn into the battle between good and evil.

Finally, the title of David Small’s autobiographical novel,
Stitches, describes not only the physical stitches left on his neck after surgery, it also describes the loose connections between himself and his distant and unhappy family. Illustrated by him, the artwork beautifully evokes the do-right and do-all scientific era of the 1950s and the boomtown of Detroit, Michigan in its heyday. This book is further proof that the graphic novel form is just as emotionally vibrant and deeply touching as any other art form.

MOVIES...
In honor of Mother’s Day, check out the movie Because I Said So with Diane Keaton. If you think that your mom is over the top, you will enjoy laughing with this film!

Following in the footsteps of television shows like
Six Feet Under, the film Sunshine Cleaning, is about a single mom who starts a biohazard removal/crime scene cleanup business in order to send her son to an expensive private school. Amy Adams, a rising star, turns in a wonderful performance as a single mom. Emily Blunt, in her supporting role as the oddball younger sister, shows depth when confronted with the long ago loss of their young mother. This film takes a look at working class people doing real work and it does so in a very respectful manner. Sunshine Cleaning has a lot of heart.

Or, for a complete change of pace, watch the distinctive, disturbing
District 9, a science fiction thriller with a unique twist. This fine film is about a race of extra-terrestrials in South Africa who become the victims of segregation and discrimination by humans. They are forced to live in sordid slums until one of the humans finds himself united with the aliens in an unexpected search for his own salvation. The movie is filmed in a documentary style that contributes to its remarkable, realistic quality.

Books and Bagels

The Painted Drum
by Louise Erdrich

"I liked the story-within-a-story format of this book."

"The writing was just beautiful, I've written down some quotes from this book to keep."

"The transition from the first part of this book was very smooth, however the transition between the second and the third part was a little jarring."

"While the author introduces issues that face Native Americans today, she does it subtly. She doesn't beat you over the head with politics."
